Bullet Time and Time

I was recently working on a project with some creatives over here at Dare, and just as everything was set to go into production the project was canned. It's a sign of the times unfortunately in digital, with our clients having to account to their bosses for every penny we want to spend making them cool shit.

Anyway, this post isn't about the industry, or the recession, or said client who got cold feet at the last minute.

The project in question involved a heavy technical aspect to the film; motion control, time slice etc. We spent two weeks meeting with a good number of post production companies, listening to their treatment of the technical problems that the concept threw up. Being privy to that process was one of the most inspiring journeys I've had in recent times. It made me realise for sure that I have been sitting on the wrong side of the Ad-Agency-Meets-Director-Meets-Postproduction-Company meeting table. I did a lot of listening and not very much talking; and a lot of reflecting.

The process made me see that it is indeed time to switch my hat from the ad agency hat to the freelance director hat. I'll always have a passion for good ideas, but right now making them work, running with them and making beautiful films is what floats my boat. Great films come from great ideas made by great people; so my mission is to work with great people on great ideas and aim my film making somewhere between great, beautiful, super real and that illusive David style which I will only find through experience.

I'm going to miss Dare; they gave me a home 4 years ago and have given me the space to find my feet and only encouragement when I said I wanted to leave to chase dreams of being a film maker. It's going to be a strange christmas, with a lot of thinking to do regarding how I can make film making work for me: Documentaries supported by Freelance Digital content direction for other Agencies.

So if you need me over Christmas I'll be in the bath, figuring things out.

In the mean time there is always Lego Matrix:
